The Youth Life Skills Training Center, learners Bridging Program.
Inclusive of sports, skills, academic schools.
The aim of the learners Bridging Program is to bridge the gap from long-term absence or non attendance from school towards school readiness.
If the child is too young or old as it be deemed, or not academically challenged or cannot be placed into formal school, he/she will be moved into the Youth Life Skills Development Program, utilizing (ABET) adult basic education training as a foundation.
The children, who are placed according to aptitude and testing, age and ability, are taught Numeracy and literacy, reading and writing according to their level of prior education. At the same time, they learn how to build up their concentration span and daily routine through attendance. There are also practical tasks and skills with balanced arts and crafts classes.
The overall result of the learners Bridging Program is improved self-esteem and independence in addition to improvements in the basic level of education. Regular assessments and evaluations are conducted, while additional remedial help is given to children with specific learning disabilities. It is a very exciting time when a child from the Program is placed into a local school after achieving the necessary entry-level requirements. Schools are chosen in terms of the children’s abilities and needs and include Private, semi Government or special Further Education Training Schools.
The training centre aims to place the maximum academic children per year into formal schooling from the program. Sometimes it is more critical to consider the child’s behavior rather than his/her academic ability in order for them to successfully integrate into the school social system.
Formal Schools
Children are placed at an appropriate Formal school as soon as the Staff at the training centre considers that he/she is ready for the move. The teachers also consult with Management and other Childcare workers to ensure that the child is considered ‘stable’ and well on the road to rehabilitation before the placement is made. This move is considered extremely important in the holistic development of the child and decisions are not taken quickly. An appropriate move to a Formal school can add enormously to the child’s self esteem and continued success in the program offered by us. The placement in school is a fundamental part of the transition program and is just as important as the or back home program.
Formal schools can also test the children’s ability to withstand peer pressure while still living in the secure environment (place of safety) of training centre. This is the often a first step to successful social reintegration of the child.
Any learner or child must maintain an aggregate of 75% to continue in any School or program, demonstrate good code of honor, values, and behavior, and participate in extra mural activities.
Youth life orientation skills Development
The purpose of the program is to provide training for the older children who are unable to attend local schools because of age constraints and poor basic education. It is our desire to enable this group of children to be able to find employment so that they may gain self-esteem and re-enter society as a contributing adult.
The basis of this teaching program is. Daily discussions, introductions, requirements and supporting paperwork such as identity documents and bank accounts, hp agreements, credit, bonds, loans and seeking additional training, certification and job placements for the youth.
Youth work skills Development
The youths are included onto various unit standard work skills development and attainment programs as “learners” where they are taught in accordance with all work and machinery aspects and safety rules. The youth are taught work ethics, dress codes and behavior above all else.
At this stage, some young adults may be linked to other entrepreneurial service program outside the training centre i.e. Tree felling and harvesting, value citizens courses etc. Unfortunately many of these programs require an established minimum level of education and some youngsters are not eligible for enrolment. The training centre runs a complete timber milling and converting process around which all other rehabilitation and associated programs run bring in a natural element.
Job placement for one of our learners having passed and certified practical training is then set up and monitored for a period of one year. The training centre placements are normally with one of our sponsors and by arrangement built in accommodation and transport etc. as start-up support. The Youth is also placed under a manager in the form of a buddy system for moral support.
Sports and Recreation
The desired outcome of any sports Program is to stimulate the children to play in a behavioral manner that will be physically fit there by being mentally fit. It is imperative to involve them in team sports and support and the community through sports and recreation. I.e. soccer, netball, and swimming.
The benefits of a Sports and Recreation Program such as this are many:
Sporting needs and talents are identified, Children are kept busy and active – resulting in less behavioral problems, they learn conflict resolution, discipline and team work while gaining improved self-esteem and physical development and more importantly are provided with an alternative to stop living on the streets.
